Snowy September scenes in Idaho's mountains

Yes, the calendar still reads September 19. Yes, it's still summer.

But yes, some of Idaho's mountains got their first dusting of snow this week!

Wait, What?

To be clear, summer snow isn't unheard of in Idaho's mountains, especially the higher peaks. But it's certainly a reminder that winter weather isn't always far off, even if the calendar hints that it should be.

But Bald Mountain in Sun Valley, Brundage Mountain, Bogus Basin and Stanley all woke up to snow on the ground...at least a little bit of it.

An unseasonably cold air mass has settled into the Pacific Northwest this week, bringing rain and unusually cool temperatures to the Treasure Valley, southwest Idaho and surrounding areas. In the valleys, this system will primarily bring periods of rain and highs ranging anywhere from 15-20 below average. Typically, our temperatures should be in the mid to upper 70's, but this week we'll be lucky to hit 60 by Thursday and Friday. | Full forecast

In the mountains though, the snow line is forecast to dip to around 6,000 ft. through the day Tuesday, and possibly could dip lower by Thursday as the coldest air of the season arrives. That means, what you see below may not be the end of the snow in the mountains this week. In the West Central mountains, 2-3" is possible on the mountain peaks today, along with another 1-2" tomorrow.

The big idea?

This pattern likely won't stick around all that long, but perhaps it is time to start thinking about hats, scarves, sweaters, and pumpkin spiced...everything. Oh, and apparently snow, too! Happy (almost) fall.
