The NFL MVP debate just got a whole lot trickier after Week 15. Going into the weekend, Brock Purdy, the San Francisco 49ers QB, had the lead over his peers. However, after having the worst game of the season on Christmas against Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens, when he threw for four interceptions, he has now slipped to 4th position, as per The Athletic.
Presently, Lamar Jackson leads the MVP race, followed by Josh Allen and Christian McCaffrey. Since the award is most likely to go to a quarterback, the race for MVP is between Jackson and Allen.
Richard Sherman chimed in on this debate by pointing out the stats between the two quarterbacks this season. His tweet heavily favored the Buffalo Bills‘ quarterback over Lamar Jackson because the former had the edge over the latter in almost every category.
However, former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant stepped in and disputed Sherman’s contention by stating that Lamar Jackson was more deserving of the award. Dez Bryant accused Josh Allen of stat-padding.
Allen been padding the wrong stats brotha. Allen don't have no meaningful wins besides Dallas. It's very possible the Bills don't make the playoffs. He tweeted on X
Despite Allen’s 40 touchdowns this season, 66.5% completion percentage, and QBR of 71.6, the receiver believes he has not done enough for his team, and the only significant win the Bills have had this season was against the Dallas Cowboys.
Dez Bryant makes a sensible case for Lamar Jackson to win the MVP award
The Buffalo Bills have beaten the Miami Dolphins, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Dallas Cowboys. So there have been good teams that they have managed to overcome.
However, Bryant is giving Lamar Jackson more credit because the Baltimore Ravens are the leading team in the NFL and clearly, Jackson deserves a lot of credit for the same.
The team is 12-3 this season sitting atop the AFC North. The Ravens have beaten the Detroit Lions and the San Francisco 49ers this season, their upcoming matchup against the Miami Dolphins will also be a significant game that will decide how good they are.

Why are the Ravens the #1 team in the NFL?

— Dez Bryant (@DezBryant) December 26, 2023Lamar Jackson has been having a great year this season, having thrown for 3,357 yards, 19 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, and a QBR of 63.0. He does not lead his position in any of the stats but his role in the Ravens’ success is undeniable.
His odds to win the MVP is -200 but the bigger question that remains is what renders a candidate eligible to win MVP at this point? Should it based on merely overall team success or a combination of individual stats compared to other candidates from the same position along with team success?
